At Parma & Son’s Ranch, we take a careful, step-by-step approach to semen collection to ensure the safety and comfort of the stallion while maintaining the quality of the sample.

The process begins by preparing the stallion and collection area after staff applies gloves and personal protective equiptment.The stallion is prepped a thorough washing of the stallions penis to prevent contamination of the semen collected- which can cause sperm to die.

The collection area, which was already sanitized from prior use, is surface cleaned and re-sanitized.

The collection tech, and anyone involved in the collection process changes gloves and PPE to protect themselves, the stallion, and the collected semen.

A condom-like collection bag is opened inserted into a artificial-vaginal device which is either handheld, or attached to a mount and the stallion is brought into the collection area.

The collection tech will provide stimulation to encourage the stallion or the stallion is enticed with a mare's urine to arouse him and make him become erect, then the collection tech guides him onto the mount and/or his penis into the device

It takes only about 30-45 seconds of stimulation from the artifical-vaginal device before the stallion begins to ejaculate, and then another 10-15 seconds for the ejaculation process to be complete.

The collected semen is taken to the lab and tested for vitality, while the stallion remains in the collection area and is cleaned again.
